1920

The 18th Amendment is enforced through the Volstead Act, marking the start of prohibition.  While, the 19th Amendment grants women the right to vote.

1925

The conflict of traditional values and modernity come to a crossroads with the Scopes “Monkey” Trial.

1927

Hope, optimism, and heroes are central themes of the Roaring 20s.  Lindbergh’s trans-Atlantic flight to France inspired the world.

1929

The stock market crashes starting in October 1929, bringing with it a steady decline in banks, industry and foreclosures.  

1930

The Hawley-Smoot Tariff of 60% is passed in order to protect American industry during the Great Depression

1932

The Great Depression reached its peak of unemployment at 24.9%, exports have fallen to less than 50% 1929 levels and 25% of banks have failed.

1933

With the election of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the New Deal was ushered into American society, promising Relief, Recovery, and Reform.

1935

The U.S. Supreme Court brings the first in a string of challenges to the constitutionality of the New Deal
