1800

The Election of 1800 is the first presidential election in the United States to have a peaceful transfer of power from one political party to another

1803

President Thomas Jefferson authorizes the purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million

1820

Henry Clay negotiates the admission of Missouri as a slave state into the Union.  The Missouri Compromise also created Maine as a free state and banned slavery above the 36,30N parrellel in the Louisiana Territory

1830

President Andrew Jackson signs the Indian Removal Act into law, authorizing the removal of Native Americans from their land to federal land west of the Mississippi 

1846-1848

War between the United States and Mexico as a result of the United States’ annexation of Texas in 1845, as well as territorial disputes around the Rio Grande.

1848

Gold is discovered in the Sacramento Valley of California, sparking a rush of gold minders to California territory
