1934

Hitler denounces the Treaty of Versailles, setting the stage for annexing, reoccupying and invading Europe.

1935

The American Congress passes the first in a series of neutrality acts that initially bars the sales of weapons to warring nations and expands to limiting all trade.

1940

Roosevelt makes the Destroyer-for Bases deal with Great Britain, breaking away from the Neutrality Acts of 1935, 1936 and 1937.

1941

Congresses passes the Lend-Lease Act (June), America extends embargo on Japan (July) Roosevelt and Churchill sign the Atlantic Charter (August), Japan launches a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.

1942

Roosevelt Executive Order 9066, authorizing the establishment of “relocation” camps mainly targeting Japanese-Americans living on the west coast.

1944

Allied forces successfully gain a foothold in France after D-Day (June).  General MacArthur and Allied forces take back the Philippines in the Battle of Leyte Gulf (October).

1945

Franklin Roosevelt dies while in office (April) and Harry Truman becomes the new president. Germany surrenders, ending the war in Europe (May). The United States drops two atomic bombs on Japan, leading to an armistice in the Pacific (August)
