OVERVIEW

United States Geography is the first mini-unit, or topic taught, in the “Geography of the United States and Canada” unit.  This topic covers US territories and regions, movement patterns, climate, land use, government, economic indicators, cultural information, destinations, and key land and water features. 

LEARNING TARGETS

  1. Students can identify 5 different regions in the United States and argue what distinguishes each region from the other.
  2. Students can describe each of America’s branches of government and outline the responsibilities of each branch.
  3.  Students can evaluate America’s level of economic stability using key economic indicators to justify their response.
  4. Students can identify and locate major land and features in the United States. 

TOPICS and TERMS

  • US Territories: Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands 
  • Regions: West, Southwest, Midwest, Southeast, Northeast
  • Climate and Land: Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Ring of Fire, Sound, The Great Lakes, Crater Lake, Mississippi River, Rocky Mountains, Appalachian Mountains, Sierra Nevada Mountains
  • Other Key Terms: Cultural Diffusion, Republican Government, National Park Service

Geography of Canada is the second mini-unit, or topic taught, in the “Geography of the United States and Canada” unit.  This topic covers Canada’s regions, provinces and territories, climate regions, cultural information, historic events, indigenous peoples, immigration, trade, land use, government, economic indicators, destinations, and key land and water features. 

LEARNING TARGETS

  1. Students can identify 5 different regions in Canada and argue what distinguishes each region.
  2. Students can analyze how land features and location contribute to differences in Canada’s climate.
  3. Students can apply their knowledge of Canadian historical events that influenced Canada’s government, indigenous peoples, and places such as Quebec. 
  4. Students can describe each branch of Canada’s government and outline the responsibilities of each branch.
  5.  Students can evaluate Canada’s level of economic stability using key economic indicators to justify their response.
  6. Students can identify and locate major land and features in Canada.
